malqaf
The Egyptian windcatcher: a roof scoop facing the prevailing wind.
Traditional Cairo houses used a malqaf, a shaft rising above the roof with a single opening turned toward the cool north wind, to send air down into the main hall. It is the Egyptian cousin of the Persian badgir.
