hayat

The open, roofed living space of the traditional Anatolian house.

In many traditional Turkish houses the rooms open onto a hayat: a semi-open space, usually on the upper floor and facing a courtyard or garden, where daily life happened in the warm months. Later, more enclosed versions became the sofa, the central hall of the house.
